Italy has only been safe for a matter of hours, but she is already completely focused on something else. In the video shared by @thelabellefoundation, the mama rescue dog curls herself around her seven babies, checking on them constantly and staying close every chance she gets. Just a day earlier, she was sitting in a shelter while heavily pregnant, with her future hanging by a thread. Now she is watching over every tiny squeak and sleepy stretch in wonder. All they need now is a foster home where they can stay together and keep growing safely.

Mama rescue dog wants nothing more than to hold her babies close and a safe home

The volunteer on camera explains that Italy, a gentle Shar-Pei, was rescued from a Bakersfield shelter just before she was due to give birth. She welcomed seven puppies later that night, and by the following morning, the whole family was finally somewhere safe.

As the camera moves between Italy and her newborns, it’s obvious she is completely devoted to them. She nurses them patiently, keeps them tucked against her, and barely seems to let them out of her sight. When someone scratches her chin or leans in to kiss her on the nose, she happily accepts the affection before turning her attention right back to the puppies. The rescue team describes her as incredibly sweet, adding that she is taking wonderful care of her babies. One by one, the tiny pups are shown curled up together while Italy watches over them.

The video also clears up a common misconception about fostering a nursing mom and her litter. Italy is already doing the hardest part herself. She feeds her puppies, cleans them, keeps them warm, and makes sure they are comfortable. Foster families simply give her a safe, quiet place to continue raising them while the rescue provides the supplies and support they need.

That’s why the volunteers end with a heartfelt plea for someone to open their home. Keeping Italy and her puppies together during these first few weeks could make all the difference before they are ready to begin the next chapter of their lives.
